About:

A few facts about the Central Committee

It starts with the Caucus, where Republican residents of each precinct (or ward) choose two of their neighbors to represent them on the Mahaska County Republican Central Committee. With nine precincts, eighteen members and four executive officers make up the central committee. The executive committee is generally elected among the members of the Central Committee, making room for a replacement from the precinct they previously served directly.

In addition to electing members to the Central Committee, Caucus goers select delegates to represent them at the Republican County Convention. At the County Convention, delegates are chosen to represent the county at the District and State Conventions.

An important objective of delegates at the County Convention is maintenance of the County Platform. At the convention, members propose new items (called platform planks), and amendments to existing sections. The approved result is passed to the District Convention in care of a delegate elected to serve on the District Platform Committee. As you can see from the preamble to the Mahaska County Republican Platform, we highly encourage our elected officials to understand and adhere to the principles enumerated in the platform.

It is the vision of the Mahaska County Republican Central Committee that through grassroots effort, we will recover true representative government as intended by the framers of our Constitution, starting at the local level, and encouraging citizens to understand the issues and to be involved to the extent of their ability.

Precincts

There are five rural precincts and Oskaloosa is divided into four, called Wards. The population of each division is approximately the same.

Officers

Central Committee officers are Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Officers are elected by the Committee members for a two-year term in odd-numbered years. They do not directly represent any precinct.

Speakers

We frequently hear from various elected officials at the monthly meeting, including State Senators and Representatives, members of the County Board of Supervisors, the County Attorney, our Sherriff, the County Auditor, and others.

Signs

Yard signs for various candidates are usually available for the asking ahead of elections. Let us know if you want one.
We are often looking for high-traffic locations for 4×8 barn signs as well. Send us a note if you have such a location and are willing to host a sign for the Republican candidate of your choice.
